William D Hardie

May 9, 1921 — March 17, 2015

Bill was born May 10, 1921, Rutland Township, rural Kingsley, Iowa, .the son of William D. and Hilda L. (Hinkhouse) Hardie. He attended rural schools in Plymouth County before graduating from Pierson High School in 1938. In 1942 he married Helen James before he began serving in The U.S. Army. He was stationed in the European Theater with the 5th Armored Division, taking part in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. After his honorable discharge Bill returned home to the Pierson area where began farming the land homesteaded by his grandfather, Thomas Hardie. Bill and Helen had four sons, Tom, Scott, Chuck and Allen who died during infancy. Bill was a director of the Pierson Farmers Elevator for six years, director of the Kingsley-Pierson school district for nine years, and past master of Rutland Lodge No. 607 AF&AM where he was also a fifty year member. Bill was a longtime member of the Christian Church of Pierson, and upon moving to Kingsley he joined the Congregational United Church of Christ. Helen passed away in 1984. Bill married Jean (Goddard) Ploen in 1985, after their marriage Bill and Jean moved to Kingsley, Iowa. Jean passed away in 2002. Survivors include three sons, Tom (Barb) Hardie of Pierson, IA, Scott (Sarah) Hardie of Winterset, IA, and Chuck (Jerri Jean) Hardie of Kingsley, Iowa, two stepdaughters, Judy (Jim) Darby of Shell Lake, Wisconsin, & Karen (Ray) Wilson of Halfway, Oregon. There are eight grandchildren, Tammi of Des Moines, IA, Tim of Chicago, IL, Josh of Norwalk, IA, Jacci (Aaron) Taylor of Winterset, IA, and Adam (Julianne) of St. Paul, MN, Kyle of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Kevin of Kingsley, IA, and Becky (Ryan) Wiese of Brandon, SD. Also, surviving are 7 great-grandchildren, Peyton, Brooklyn, Lauryn and Kaitlyn Hardie, Hunter and Haley Taylor and Benjamin Wiese, eight step-grandchildren, one brother, George(Geri) Hardie of Mission, TX, two nieces, Leslie (Marc) Stewart of Laurens, IA and Lisa (Oscar) Nordstrom, Sioux City, Iowa. Bill is also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Kimberly Jean Hardie.
