Lorraine N McDermott

May 3, 1928 — October 18, 2014

Lorraine was born May 3, 1928 in Plymouth County, rural Kingsley, the daughter of Arthur and Etta (Chappell) Nugent. She attended and graduated from Union Consolidated School in 1945. She married Leo McDermott at St. Michael Catholic Church in Kingsley on October 29, 1946. They were blessed with four daughters. They farmed both in the Moville and Kingsley areas until Leo's death in January, 1970. Lorraine attended Westmar College, receiving a B.A. degree in 1962. Later, she received an M.A. degree from Morningside College in 1972. She taught in Plymouth County rural schools for six years and Kindergarten in the Kingsley-Pierson School for thirty-seven years. She especially liked to teach children to read and to read stories to them. She retired from teaching in 1991, but substitute taught and tutored at school for several years. Lorraine also volunteered her time to the children's Faith Formation Program at St. Michael's. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, and St. Michael's Guild. She was also a lifetime member of the National Education Association. Lorraine enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed being involved in church activities, teaching, gardening, quilting, crossword puzzles, shopping and reading. Lorraine will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Louise (Sam) Thompson of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jeannie (Wayne) Burnham of Sgt Bluff, Iowa, Debbie (Greg) Royer of Kingsley, Iowa, and Lisa (Craig) Wiese of Cherokee, Iowa, and her loving grandchildren, Chris Royer, Jennifer (Sebastian) Attie, Amy Thompson, Jessica (Chad) Thompson, Kate (Michael) Pratt, Amanda (Rory) Eisele, Tammy Burnham, Tyler (Kari) Burnham, and Angie (Matt) Thurman. Great grandchildren include Xavier Royer, Alex and Abby Thompson, Emerson and Aida Pratt, Ali Jo and Ethan Burnham, Lincoln and Emily Eisele, and Mason Coyle. Other surviving relatives include her in-laws, Marie White, Vince and Delores McDermott, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leo, brother, Earl Nugent and sister, Hilda Klahn.
