John P. Lindgren, 98, of Kingsley passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.John Percy Lindgren, the second of ten children, was born March 19, 1917 at Washta, Iowa to Nels Lindgren and Ida Johnson Lindgren. He attended school at Grand Meadow. He worked as a farm hand for Ray Olson for five years. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1943. John was a member of Nash Post #140 in Kingsley for 67 years.John was united in marriage to Elna Jean Thomson on November 25, 1943 at Augustana Lutheran Church in Sioux City. They resided briefly in Sioux City, and John worked at the Swift Meat Packing Plant before they began their farming career March 1, 1944. They lived just south of Kingsley until March 1947, when they moved to a farm two miles north of Kingsley. They farmed there until 1977 when they moved into Kingsley. They continued to farm until they retired in 1983. John had an active interest in farming until his death. On September 5, 2012, John and Elna moved into the Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center.John was baptized in the Swedish Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa on July 20, 1917. He was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Kingsley, Iowa on May 11, 1941, and remained a member of First Lutheran Church until his death. He held many different offices in the church. He was a long-standing member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau. He served on the Board of Directors of the Kingsley Elevator for six years.John is survived by his two sons, Stanley (Sylvia) Lindgren and Jim (Karen) Lindgren both of Kingsley; four daughters, Carol (Wendell) Dickey of Urbandale, IA, Colleen (Bob) Murphy of Olathe, KS, Gloria (Craig) Merry of Sioux City, IA and Shari Lindgren of Kimball, NE; grandchildren, Randy (Tammi) Dickey of Urbandale, IA, Dawn (Chad) Kestner of Altoona, IA, Cory (Kim) Lindgren of Kingsley, Wendy (Craig) Moritz of Pierson, IA, Kirk (Nicole) Lindgren of Kingsley, Michael (Megan) Lindgren of Paullina, IA, Kim (Brad) Tusa of Jackson, MN, Nikki (Curtis) Motz of Kingsley, Taylor and Dreysen Lindgren of Kingsley, Lindsay (Matthew) Croft of Spring Hill, KS, Michele Murphy of Olathe, KS, Kyle (Amanda) Merry of Centerville, IA, and Bryan (Carrie) Merry of Lincoln, NE; great-grandchildren, Haley Dickey, Ryan Dickey, Avery Kestner, Megan Kestner, Gavin Tusa, Caden Tusa, Shaylee Foster, Addi Foster, Brynlee Motz, Raylee Lindgren, Alex Lindgren, Mitchell Moritz, McKenna Moritz, Trae Moritz, Max Lindgren, Dexter Lindgren, Jaxson Lindgren, Dylan Merry, and McKenzie Merry and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by Elna, his wife of 69 years; his parents; three brothers, Albert, Harry, and Art; six sisters, Florence Henry, Vera Plendl, Ann Taylor, Ruby Apollo, Gladys Petersen, and Maxine Lukken; and a grandson-in-law, Aaron Foster.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2015 at First Lutheran Church in Kingsley with Rev. Duane Miesner officiating. Burial will be in the Kingsley Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Nash Post 140 of Kingsley. Visitation will be held at Rohde Funeral Home on Sunday, July 19, 2015 from 4-7 p.m. with family present from 5-7 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by Rohde Funeral Home in Kingsley.
