Jan was born May 7, 1927, the daughter of Buel and Jessie (Haddow) Petersen. She lived in rural Moville, Iowa and attended country school in Wolfcreek and Arlington townships. She graduated from Moville High School in May 1945. After graduation she worked for W.L. Sandborn Implement Co. in Moville as secretary. On February 14, 1948, she married her school sweetheart, Dale Sargent. They lived in Ogden, Iowa for one year and then returned to Moville where they farmed and raised four son, Randy, Dave, Marty and Brian. She worked at Woodbury Central Elementary School as librarian for many years. She was a long time member of the Moville United Methodist Church and served as secretary there for 14 years, retiring in November 1996. After her husband 's death in October 1985 she married Dean Royer of Kingsley, Iowa, August 1, 1987 and has made her home there ever since that time. Survivors include her three sons, Randy (EE) Sargent of flowery Branch, Georgia, Marty Sargent of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Brian (Ginger) Sargent of Hillsboro, Alabama, daughter-in-law Jan (Kyle) Thomas of Hot Springs, Arkansas, step-daughter, Ronda (Bill) Anderson of Sioux City, Iowa, step-son, Greg (Debbie) Royer of Kingsley, Iowa. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren, Senator Bill Anderson, Michael Anderson, Danielle Murphy, Dee Dee Millard, Angie Washburn, Chris Royer, Jessica Thompson, Kate Pratt, Jodie Clower, Tony Sargent, Chris Sargent, Lila Ragan, Missy Gragg, Julie Cox. Extended family of John and Cindy Hanenburg, Dalton, Clara and Jorie.
