Helen Hagan passed away peacefully on November 11, 2023, having lived a full life as a loving wife, devoted mother, and doting grandmother / great grandmother. She was always willing to take charge, knowing that her way was THE right way. She was a wonderful mother who enjoyed baking, and maintaining an exacting standard for cleanliness that was often a source of amusement for family and friends.
Helen Schroeder, daughter of Herman and Bernadine (Rolfes) Shroeder, was born March 10th, 1934, in rural Kingsley. She attended country school at Henry No 8 and graduated as valedictorian from Kingsley High School class of 1952. She took business training at National Business Training School in Sioux City and her first full-time job was in the office of Well’s Dairy in LeMars, where she developed a love of ice cream. Helen did secretarial work at State Farm Insurance and NIPCO. Bob and Helen returned to Kingsley in 1961 when they opened Hagan Brother’s D-X with Helen as the bookkeeper. Helen was deeply connected to the Kingsley Community serving as the Kingsley City Clerk for over 30 years, City Council member, Precinct 10 Election Board, and St. Michael’s Church bookkeeper for many years.
Robert “Bob” Hagan and Helen were married September 20, 1955. This prolific union resulted in 6 children: Mike (Joan) Hagan, Patti (Dennis) Bollin, Kathy Johnson (Steve Schiltz), Leanne (Norm) Seablom, Daniel (Donna) Hagan, and Jeffrey (Lynda) Hagan, 18 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren.
Helen retired in 1999. She continued to be an avid reader and enjoyed her daily crossword puzzles. She will be remembered for her snack drawer, which often contained peanut butter Twix, homemade snickerdoodles, chocolate chip cookies, or tea cookies. Bob and Helen owned a small vacation home at Okoboji where they spent weekends visiting with family and friends.
Helen is survived by her children, and her siblings, Jo Ann Doering, Marge (Pat) Bennett, and Richard (Marilyn) Schroeder.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert, 4 siblings: Rita Idlewine, Bernice Schroeder, Arthur Schroeder, and Shirley Kass.
