Dean was born January 21, 1936, in rural Kingsley, Iowa, the son of Edwin and Hazel (Miller) Johnson. He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1954. Dean joined the Army National Guard in high school and bought his first truck at age 18. After serving in the U.S. Army from September, 1955 until July of 1957 he returned to the Pierson area. Dean married Mary Hansen, July 30, 1961 at First Lutheran Church in Kingsley, Iowa. They raised their family and lived in rural Pierson, Iowa, for 55 years. Dean was the owner and operator of Johnson Trucking for over 62 years, while driving until his retirement in 2010. He enjoyed camping, tractor rides, going to parades with his old 45 Chevy truck "The Kitchen Band," spending time with his family and visiting with friends. Dean was a member of First Lutheran Church of Kingsley, Iowa and American Legion Nash Post 140 of Kingsley. Survivors include his wife, Mary, Pierson, IA, two daughters, Shyla (Gary) Groepper, Kingsley, Iowa and Shanda (Dean) Schlinz of Cleghorn, Iowa, two sons, Ed (Jennie) Johnson, Pierson, Iowa, and Darrin (Heather) Johnson, Remsen, Iowa, 15 grandchildren, Mark, Brett (Sara) and Danielle Groepper, Derek (Felicia), Megan and Bryan Schlinz, Jenna (Corey) Moritz, Jaclyn, Kendra, Kortney, and Evan Johnson, Rebecca, Brittany, Ethan and Beau Johnson, four great-grandchildren, Kallie and Kora Moritz, and Jagger and Madden Schlinz. Also, surviving, one brother, Duane "Bud" Johnson, Merrill, Iowa, two sisters, Kris Hager, Kingsley, Iowa, and Ramona (Chuck) Simmons of Raymore, Missouri, along with brothers-in-law, Bill Smith, Versailles, Kentucky and Merlin Sievers, Wayne, Nebraska, Merlyn Hansen, Pierson, Iowa, and Leonard (Janice) Hansen, Le Mars, Iowa, several nephews and nieces. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Hazel Johnson, a brother in infancy, Edwin Jr, two sisters, Mary Smith and Elaine Sievers, father-in-law Alfred "Stovie" Hansen and mother-in-law Erma Hansen, brothers-in-law, Lou Hagar and Ken (Bev) Hansen, and sisters-in-law Donna Johnson and Kay Hansen, Betty Fischer. Nephews Robert "John" Johnson, Johnnie Hansen, and John Anderson.
